English-French Translator

Under the supervision of the Translator Team Lead and in collaboration with the translation team members, the incumbent translates, revises and copy edits a variety of texts (briefing notes, government submissions, social media posts, internal newsletters, magazine articles, etc.). Given that the organization’s documents are read by members of the university community, government and the general public, high standards of quality must be upheld.

Responsibilities:

  • Translate, from English into French, a variety of texts that are often complex and specialized, while respecting the terminology and style in use, the high standards of quality and deadlines. Material relates mainly to higher education and internal operations, such as human resources, finance and information management.
  • Revise documents translated from English into French by team members and freelancers.
  • Copyedit French documents or translations post-layout.
  • Offer linguistic advice to freelancers and staff across the organization.
  • In collaboration with team members, perform certain administrative tasks to ensure the proper functioning of the translation service (assign work, communicate with clients, develop and update linguistic resources, attend meetings, process requests as needed, etc.).

The ideal person for this role will possess the education, experience and knowledge listed below:

  • An undergraduate degree in English-French translation and at least four years of relevant experience. 
  • Excellent proficiency in French and English. 
  • Good understanding of the Microsoft Office suite, of terminology banks and other computer-assisted translation tools (e.g., MemoQ).
  • Autonomy, judgment, resourcefulness.
  • Rigour, attention to detail, discretion.
  • The ability to establish priorities, meet deadlines, adapt to unexpected situations and work under pressure.
  • Interpersonal skills, teamwork and willingness to accept revisions from peers.

You will stand out if you:

  • Have knowledge of the Canadian university sector.
  • Are a member of a professional translation association (e.g. OTTIAQ).

The position is based in Ottawa. Universities Canada has adopted a hybrid work model where employees are expected to work in the office for a minimum of two days per week. 

The hiring salary range for this position starts at $67,066 depending on experience. Candidates who do not meet all of the position requirements may be considered in an underfill capacity, in which case the candidate would be hired at a lower level than the position level.
