Institute for Integrated Energy Systems (IESVic) leads a program on the development of green transportation technology, including the modeling and optimization of next generation plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle (FCHEV) powertrain system, and hybrid electric propulsion system for marine vessels.
Centre for Aerospace Research (CfAR) provides unique expertise to design, test and fly unmanned aircraft structures for commercial and research applications.
Applied Control and Information Processing Laboratory (ACIPL) develops advanced navigation and control algorithms for autonomous vehicles, such as the quadcopter, and mobile robots.
Ocean Technology Lab (OTL) undertakes projects ranging from designing autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to evaluation of underwater instrumentation for scientific use.
Grands projets
Seaspan: University of Victoria has received over $1M funding from Seaspan to undertake research into hybrid electric locomotives, ships and large mining trucks.
Composites Research Network (CRN): CfAR continuously collaborates with CRN, which is funded with $9.8M investment from Western Economic Diversification Canada.
Boeing: CfAR collaborated with Boeing to design and develop an experimental aircraft with joined-wing configuration that has never been built or tested before.
Chercheurs
Zuomin Dong – modeling, design optimization and intelligent optical control for next generation hybrid electric vehicles including: heavy duty ships, mining vehicles, and fuel cell vehicles. Real-time optimal operation control of complex systems.
Afzal Suleman – Tier 1, Canada Research Chair in computational and experimental mechanics. His research is centered around a low cost approach to design and test novel aircraft configurations. Focus is on improved aircraft efficiencies, aerodynamic performance, reduced structural loads and lighter weight structures.
Yang Shi – Professor Shi is an internationally leading scholar in control and automation, with influential work in networked control systems, multi-agent systems, model predictive control, mechatronics, autonomous vehicles, control and optimization of energy systems.

Cooperative education is a core component of the programs offered through the Faculties of Science and Engineering. Sample placements include: Teck Ltd. Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation, Ballard Power Systems, Tesla, and E-One Moli Energy Corporation.
Entrepreneurial co-ops provide training and support for engineering students to form start-ups.
UVic Hybrid promotes hands-on training and skill development for engineering students in designing and building hybrid vehicles, and showcasing their innovation in competitions such as the EcoCar 2 Competition.
